My Story
Here’s my journey so far, which highlights the life experiences I’ve had, challenges I’ve overcome and therefore the growth I’ve had. That led me to developing skills to navigate life and achieve the results I desired.
I come from humble beginnings in India. I migrated to Australia in the year 2000 at age 24. I had no money, but like most other migrants, the desire and need to create a good life for my family and myself.
I was fortunate to land a job in IT straight away. I worked two jobs and managed to purchase a brand new off-the-plan 2-bedroom apartment in Sydney within 7 months of being in the country. I was stoked! I shared this excitement with a work colleague on a cigarette break. I said: “I get to own this apartment when I pay off the mortgage after paying off this 25-year loan”. She smiled at me in a smug manner and said: “you can own as may properties as you want Raj!” I didn’t understand what she meant. She asked me to read this book called “Rich Dad Poor Dad” and then we’ll talk.
As I queued up in Dymocks bookstore in North Sydney, I pondered: should I spend this $19.95 on this book? It was big money for a migrant who was still converting to Rupees in the back of his head. Then I said to myself: “you know what, f$*k it! I will buy this book and see what happens.
Little did I know that this single move to invest in my growth would change the trajectory of my life – completely! I learnt financial literacy for the first time. It’s not taught in schools. Money, and sex for that matter, is not discussed on the dining table in most households. Yet, those two things drive pretty much everything we do!
I read the entire series this author, Robert Kiyosaki had written. Now it was time to put what I had learnt into action.
I went on a rampage and bought 5 properties within two years, refinancing one to pay the deposit for the next. Learnt about adding value through renovations.
Then one day, I decided to quit my job and start a business. It’s an IT business that I still own and my amazing team manages for me, with hardly any involvement from me anymore.
Over the years, the business provided the cashflow to fund the property game.
Bought, sold, renovated, developed, knock-down-rebuild, secondary dwellings – you name it. I did it all! Learnt so much from it that I became a property buyer’s agent, assisting others in their journey to financial freedom.
I couldn’t get to my goal of financial freedom in 10 years by age 35, but I got there a little later at age 36 and a half. Still not bad, right?
Everything comes at a cost though. The cost was my health in this case. That’s when I realised that a good work-life balance is super critical. I slowed down the pace of accomplishment and started focussing on my inner world. Meditation and Breathwork really helped me. A regular exercise routine became a necessity, not just to look good.
Life then took a big turn with mum being hit by a bus back in India and tragically passing away instantly. There was nothing I could do. The grief of this tragedy was a major hit. Navigating grief is hard and takes a while. Finding the strength to bounce back wasn’t easy.
Kids gave me purpose to keep going. I am so proud of the wonderful individuals they both have become.
The arranged marriage I was in wasn’t fulfilling and the chronic stress of emotional disconnection took it’s toll on my psyche. I was irritable, resentful and quite frankly miserable to be around.
I didn’t know it at that time, but now I do that it was major depression. Coupled with the anxiety I had since teenage years, it made it really hard to find purpose and motivation again. This phase of my life went on for years.
I somehow summed up the courage to start again, labelled it as my “Fight for Joy”, and went on to eventually, after a lot of pain, find the woman that I had always desired.
There were many many “dark night(s) of the soul” that completely shattered me. Ripped me apart! Finding the courage to pick up the pieces was not easy, but I gave myself no choice but to succeed.
Then I could focus on my life’s purpose, which is to empower individuals in achieving the best version of themselves. Which is what I do now. It is super rewarding and completely in-line with my life’s purpose.
More than the fact that I am Certified Life Coach and NLP Practitioner, my lived experience qualifies me to offer guidance in only those areas in which I have done well. I have something of value to share.
